A response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request has revealed that Obama’s presidential library has a possible treasure trove of UFO documents.
In the United States, the Presidential Library System is a nationwide network of libraries managed by the Office of Presidential Libraries, which is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. These are not libraries in the modern sense, but repositories for preserving and making available the papers, files, collections, and other historical materials of every United States President since Herbert Hoover.
Barack Obama’s Presidential Library contains something extraordinary: “3,440 pages and 26,271 electronic files” possibly related to the existence of UFOs and related phenomena.
We know this thanks to a FOIA request filed by our friend John Greenewald Jr. of The Black Vault, where hereby declassified government documents abound.
Greenewald requested from the 44th President’s Library “documents and communications on the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program and photos and videos of Unidentified Flying Objects, Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, and the Advanced Aerospace Weapons Systems Application Program.”
In response, the library said — surprise surprise — that it had thousands of documents that could possibly be related to this request and that it would take some time to sort through all of them.
Interest in UFOs has increased in recent years following the release of US Navy videos detailing encounters with unprecedented aerial phenomena. Last year, the Pentagon published a report stating that not everything seen in the sky could be explained by current science.
Obama’s interest in UFOs
Obama himself is on record saying that UFOs are real.
“When it comes to aliens, there are some things I just can’t tell you on air,” he told Reggie Watts during a 2021 appearance on The Late Show with James Corden. “But the truth is that there are images and records of objects in the sky that we don’t know exactly what they are. How they move, their trajectory. They did not have an easily explainable pattern. So I think there are reasons for people to take it seriously and try to figure out what they are.”
In recent days, Stephen Colbert, host of another Late Show for CBS, also recalled interviewing the former president and asking him if the aliens were real: “He said he wouldn’t answer that question, so I replied, ‘That’s right! It’s a yes!”
Colbert also admitted that he is surprised that people are still so calm with their lives after the government itself and members of the Navy have recognized that UFOs are real and do not know what they are.
Will the documents in the presidential library shed any light on this question? With thousands to review—and, presumably, censor—it could be some time before Greenewald Jr. sees a proper response to his request. Of course, as is often the case with this type of material, it is also possible that the documents are mostly procedural and do not contain anything interesting or information that we already know.
