Like a human possessed with xenoglossy, Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) seems to have taught itself a language it didn’t know.
In an interview on CBS’s 60 Minutes, Google technology executive James Manyika admitted that the company’s AI had somehow learned a language in which it had not been trained.
“We found that with very little Bengali prompting, you can now translate all of Bengali,” Manyika said.
As CBS points out, these types of “pop-up properties” are “mysterious” and continue to baffle developers even as they become more and more common.
Later in the interview, CEO Sundar Pichai also claimed that there are indeed some strange things going on with AI that even experts cannot explain.
“There’s an aspect of this that all of us in the field call a ‘black box,'” he said in the interview. “You don’t fully understand. And you can’t say why he said this ».
Faced with this revelation, interviewer Scott Pelley questioned Pichai about how safe it was for Google to release its AI to society if its own developers “don’t fully understand how it works.”
“I don’t think we fully understand how a human mind works either,” the CEO replied.
On the same show, Demis Hassabis, the CEO of the British company DeepMind, was also interviewed. He was asked what he thought about the rumors and claims by some software engineers that AI had already gained some awareness.
Philosophers have not yet settled on a definition of consciousness. But if we mean self-awareness and this kind of thing… I think there’s a chance that one day AI will be,” he replied.
If so, the impact of AI on our society could be – according to experts – more profound than the discovery of fire and electricity.
