The Mysterious Inhabitants Of Friendship Island: Extraterrestrials in Chile?
Friendship Island
Extraterrestrials in Chile

Beginning in the 1980s and continuing for over two decades, a group of Chilean civilians and researchers documented what they described as sustained, direct contact with a community of technologically advanced beings living on a secret island off the coast of southern Chile. The beings called themselves “the Friendship” and maintained that they were human — though of origins and capabilities that far surpassed anything known to conventional science. The case, known as the Friendship Island or simply “La Amistad” phenomenon, is one of the most extensively documented and strangest contact cases in South American UFO history, involving multiple credible witnesses, physical encounters, and a level of ongoing interaction that goes far beyond a typical UFO sighting.

The Origin of the Contact

The Friendship phenomenon is most closely associated with Octavio Ortiz, a Chilean ham radio operator who claimed that in the 1980s he began receiving transmissions from a group identifying themselves as living in isolation on an unnamed island in the Chilean archipelago south of Puerto Montt. The transmissions were clear, coherent, and persistent. The beings communicated in Spanish and described themselves as a community dedicated to a philosophical and spiritual mission related to humanity’s development. They claimed advanced knowledge of medicine, physics, and technology. Over time, Ortiz and a small circle of associates were allegedly invited to visit the island by boat, where they reported encountering tall, Nordic-appearing individuals in a community that possessed technology indistinguishable from science fiction — including medical devices capable of curing terminal illness instantly.

The Healings and Physical Encounters

The most dramatic element of the Friendship accounts involves alleged miraculous healings. Several individuals who claimed contact with the Friendship group described being cured of serious conditions — cancers, degenerative diseases, severe injuries — through medical procedures conducted by the island’s inhabitants using technology that produced no pain, required no surgery, and generated results that the participants’ own physicians could not explain. Chilean journalist and researcher Ernesto de la Fuente, who investigated the case extensively, documented testimony from multiple individuals who corroborated aspects of the healings and the physical contact. The convergence of independent accounts describing the same island, the same inhabitants, and the same inexplicable medical outcomes gave the case a degree of corroborative weight that a single-witness account would lack.

Who Were the Friendship?

The Friendship’s own explanation for their origins has evolved across different accounts but maintains consistent core elements: they are human beings, not extraterrestrials, who have existed outside mainstream human civilization for an extremely long time — some versions suggest thousands of years. They possess technology and knowledge that far exceeds what conventional science has achieved, including energy systems, medical technology, and spacecraft or aircraft of their own design. They monitor human civilization with concern and intervene selectively when they judge it necessary, though they maintain strict non-interference with political and social processes. This description — advanced human civilization living in deliberate concealment from the mainstream world — places the Friendship in the category of what researchers call “ultra-terrestrials,” beings that are human in origin but so far advanced as to be functionally indistinguishable from extraterrestrials in their capabilities.

The Physical Island: Searches and Frustrations

Multiple attempts to locate Friendship Island by independent investigators and journalists have been conducted across the decades since the initial reports. The Chilean archipelago south of Puerto Montt encompasses thousands of islands, many completely uninhabited and accessible only by boat through treacherous channels. Witnesses who claimed to have visited the island reported that it was concealed through some combination of geographic remoteness and what they described as active camouflage or deflection technology that caused boats approaching too closely to become disoriented and unable to locate the island’s exact position. No external investigator has produced verifiable evidence of the island’s location or existence. The Friendship group’s communications reportedly ceased in the late 1990s, with participants receiving a final message indicating that the community was changing its mode of operation.

The Legacy and Significance of the Case

The Friendship phenomenon sits at the intersection of several major themes in anomalous research: extraterrestrial or ultra-terrestrial contact, breakaway civilizations, suppressed technology, and the question of benevolent interventionist entities engaged with human affairs. Its two-decade duration, the number of named and credible witnesses involved, and the specificity of the accounts make it qualitatively different from brief encounter reports. Whether the Friendship was exactly what it claimed to be, some other phenomenon misidentified through cultural and spiritual expectation, or an elaborate long-running deception has never been definitively established. What the case unquestionably demonstrates is that the contact experience — the sustained, apparently physical interaction between humans and beings of unknown origin — is not limited to brief nighttime abductions but can encompass ongoing relationships that transform the lives of those involved in ways that leave lasting and verifiable marks.

    1. I believe that we are not alone and have never been alone. I would like to think that we are going to be saved from ourselves as now the world seems to be going backwards as a race but forward in technology. Why do people only want to exploit for self gain and power. Maybe I live in a fantasy world but it’s better than the reality of the world today.
