Few locations in the United States have generated a more concentrated and diverse collection of paranormal phenomena than a 512-acre ranch in the Uintah Basin of northeastern Utah. Known as Skinwalker Ranch — a name derived from the Navajo concept of a shapeshifting supernatural entity — the property has been the site of reported UFO sightings, cattle mutilations, poltergeist activity, crop circle formations, mysterious orbs, and at least one encounter with a creature that witnesses described as enormous, intelligent, and seemingly immune to physical harm. The ranch has attracted scientific investigators, intelligence community interest, and eventually its own television series, yet the phenomena documented there remain as unexplained as when the first modern investigators arrived in the mid-1990s.

The Sherman Family and the First Modern Reports

The modern era of Skinwalker Ranch investigation began in 1994 when Terry and Gwen Sherman purchased the property and almost immediately began experiencing phenomena that drove them from the ranch within two years. The Shermans documented cattle mutilations of a type familiar to researchers — clean excisions with no blood and no tracks, performed with apparent surgical precision on animals that had been alive hours earlier. They reported UFOs of multiple types: bright orbs that moved intelligently and seemed aware of observation, large structured craft that moved silently over the property, and objects that descended from high altitude and appeared to enter the ground. Most dramatically, Terry Sherman reported an encounter with an enormous wolf-like animal — far larger than any known wolf species — that was shot multiple times at close range with no visible effect before simply disappearing. The Shermans contacted local law enforcement, who could offer no explanation, and eventually sold the property to Robert Bigelow.

NIDS and the Scientific Investigation

Robert Bigelow, a Las Vegas real estate billionaire with a longstanding personal interest in UFO research, purchased Skinwalker Ranch in 1996 and established the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS) to conduct systematic scientific investigation of the phenomena. NIDS deployed a team of trained observers — including physicists, biologists, and former law enforcement and intelligence professionals — who lived on and around the property and documented events over several years. Their findings, never fully published, reportedly included multiple independent observations of UAP, detection of unusual electromagnetic anomalies, and at least one encounter with an entity in a hovering craft that was observed by multiple team members simultaneously. The NIDS investigation was significant because it brought professional scientific observers to a location where phenomena occurred repeatedly, rather than relying on retrospective witness accounts.

The Creature Encounter

Among the most discussed incidents from the ranch involves a luminous orb and what appeared to be a physical creature associated with it. NIDS investigators reported observing a large, dark creature emerging from or associated with a tear or portal-like opening in the air — an opening that appeared as a luminous, roughly circular area of distorted space. The creature was described as enormous and moved with intelligence and deliberate purpose before the opening closed. This account, reported by trained professional observers rather than isolated witnesses, placed the Skinwalker phenomena in a category beyond simple UFO sightings — suggesting either that the location hosts multiple distinct types of anomalous phenomena or that all the observed events, from the UAP to the creature encounters, are manifestations of a single underlying phenomenon operating across multiple sensory domains simultaneously.

Government Interest and the BAASS Contract

In 2008, Bigelow’s aerospace company BAASS (Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies) received a $22 million contract from the Defense Intelligence Agency — the same funding stream that supported AATIP. Part of this work involved continued research at Skinwalker Ranch, connecting the property directly to official US government UFO investigation infrastructure. The DIA’s interest in the ranch suggests that whatever the phenomena represent, US intelligence agencies consider them worth serious study. Details of what was found under the government-funded investigation remain classified. When BAASS’s contract expired, the ranch was sold to a Utah real estate developer, Brandon Fugal, who opened it to further investigation and whose team’s findings have been documented in the History Channel series “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch,” which has recorded physical measurements — radiation anomalies, aerial phenomena, and subsurface anomalies — consistent with the historical accounts.

What the Phenomena Might Mean

The concentration and diversity of phenomena at Skinwalker Ranch has led researchers to propose several overarching frameworks. The “window area” hypothesis suggests that certain geographic locations — typically associated with specific geological features, magnetic anomalies, or intersections of underground water systems — act as zones of enhanced paranormal activity, where the boundary between ordinary physical reality and something beyond it is unusually thin. The UAP, creature encounters, and poltergeist phenomena at Skinwalker may all be expressions of the same underlying anomaly rather than separate unexplained events. Jacques Vallee, one of the most rigorous UFO researchers in history, has proposed that UAP phenomena globally share characteristics with the Skinwalker events — a multi-sensory, apparently intelligent engagement with human observers that operates across categories (physical craft, energy forms, biological entities) in ways that resist reduction to a single conventional explanation. Skinwalker Ranch, with its density of documented events and its sustained scientific investigation, stands as perhaps the most important laboratory for this question that anomalous research has ever had access to.
